FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) I just wanted to bring to your attention our next two events. First is our patronal feast day on November 3. A description of this event is found below. Even if you are not able to come to the lunch, I hope that you will be able to join us for the Mass with the bishop. The second event is the patronal feast day of the Shrine of St. Elizabeth on November 17. We will have a bilingual Mass at 11:30AM followed by a sit-down meal. Due to the limited seating, we will take first the reservation of the St. Elizabeth/Emeric parishioners and their guests. And later it will be opened to the wider public.
(2) Since this afternoon at 3PM we will commemorate the 1956 revolution, at the Mass (petition time) we will pray for all those who have given their lives in this fight for freedom. At the end of the Mass we will sing the Hungarian Anthem.
WHEN IS IT TOO LATE TO COME TO MASS AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GO TO COMMUNION? As you all know, on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation, we have a duty to be present at the whole Mass. This is a grave obligation, meaning that missing Mass without a grave reason (such as being sick, or unable to get to the church due to the lack of transportation), is a mortal sin and we must repent of it and go to confession first, before we could receive Holy Communion. Being at a Protestant service or watching Mass at home does not fulfil this obligation. Now the question of lateness. We must be present for the whole Mass. The Mass consists of two main parts: Liturgy of the Word and the Liturgy of the Eucharist. Thus, to be present at the whole Mass means to be present at these two main parts. If it happens that we are late (I hope not on purpose), and we hear the gospel, at least partially, we can say that we have participated in the Liturgy of the Word as the gospel reading is its culmination. Therefore, if we come to Mass and the homily is already being preached, we have come too late and the Mass attendance no longer counts as fulfilling our Sunday obligation (if it was our fault for being late). I do not share this so that some can be affirmed in their tardiness. In fact, being late on purpose for the Mass or not caring to be there on time is a venial sin. I wanted to teach you this so that when things happen on the road, for example, and you come late, you would know where the cut-off point is. If you have any questions on this, please do not hesitate to talk to me.
OUR PATRONAL FEAST will be celebrated on November 3 and Bp. Kornél Fábry, auxiliary bishop of Esztergom-Budapest, will be our main celebrant at 11AM Mass. We will begin with a Eucharistic Adoration after 9AM Mass in English. At 10:45AM we will have the Benediction, followed by the Solemn Mass at 11AM. After the Mass, we will have a sit down meal. The menu will be: traditional chicken soup, roast pork with mushroom sauce, rice pilaf, cabbage salad, walnut torte, coffee. The cost of the meal will be $25 and $15 for students (free for children of six years of age or under) and you can register by October 30 with Maria Zsula (216-676-5863) or Maria Meszaros (440-331-0391).
