FROM THE DESK OF FR. BONA: (1) Welcome to Bp. Kornél Fábry who is celebrating with us our patronal feast day, Saint Emeric. He is an auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Esztergom-Budapest and, in addition to his many other duties, he is involved in the ministry to Hungarians in diaspora, especially outside of Europe. We are very happy to have him here with us as we also celebrate the 120th anniversary of the founding of St. Emeric parish. Welcome also to all of you who are joining us for these celebrations. We appreciate your support.
(2) Cleveland’s Buckeye area was the first and the largest Hungarian neighborhood. However, a significant portion of Hungarians also settled in the Irishtown Bend and the Ohio City. For many years, they would walk the 4.6 miles to St. Elizabeth church and 4.6 miles back home. This trip probably took around 3.5 hours. The need for a church that would be closer was obvious. This came to fruition in 1904 when a substantial number of Hungarian Catholics were able to organize themselves in the Ohio City. For this occasion, we have slightly rearranged the Msgr. Boehm memorial room where we have some historical items and pictures on display. Please, stop by and see the little exhibit. You can see there, for example, the map of the three different places where St. Emeric parish had its church building. We are planning to refresh this exhibition from time to time.
(3) The music for next Sunday’s Mass is provided by our Youth choir.
PATRONAL FEAST INDULGENCES: Indulgences can be gained on patronal feast days, which are celebrations honoring the patron saint or title of a church. These indulgences are granted by the Church to facilitate the remission of temporal punishment due to sins already forgiven. Conditions for Gaining Indulgences: To obtain an indulgence on a patronal feast day, the faithful must: (1) have the intention to gain the indulgence; (2) perform the prescribed works or acts of piety (in this case it is the visit of the church that is celebrating its patronal feast-day and praying the Our Father and the Creed (by being here, you have fulfilled this); (3) fulfill the usual conditions: sacramental confession (within 21 days of the day of indulgence [either before or after]), reception of Holy Communion, and prayer for the intentions of the Holy Father.
CHILDREN’S CATECHETICAL PROGRAM: the next session will be on Sunday, November 10, after the 11AM Mass. All children are welcome. It will last about 15 minutes.
